What if you had to pick one? Effective or excellent?
I know, I know. The excellent police among us will say that you don’t have to pick (and depending on how close to perfection excellence is to you that is probably true) but what I do know is there will always be a tension between effectiveness and excellence.
You can always spend a few more hours practicing before you release that new song.
You can always practice that sermon more times.
You can always adjust the lighting cues one more time.
Here is the result of the tension being always won by excellence.
It is possible to be excellently ineffective.
So, if I had to pick one I’d pick effectiveness. I am okay with a few scratches on the paint and a few “i”‘s not dotted if I win the race and write the book.
